The process · Common questions · Updated 2026

Everything we get asked,
before the kettle boils.

Eighteen years of doing this means we've heard most questions twice. Below: the process from your phone call to the day the gate opens, and the questions people most often ask.

§ 01The process

Seven stages, one at a time.

I
Day 0

A five-minute phone call

We ask roughly where you are, what you're imagining, and tell you on the call whether we're a good fit.
II
Days 1–7

A 90-minute site visit

James or Mariella comes with a tape, a sketchbook and a flask. We measure, photograph, talk. No charge, no deposit.
III
Days 8–17

A drawing & quotation

Within ten working days, you receive a hand-drawn elevation and a fixed-price quote. Both arrive by post. Both are yours to keep.
IV
When you're ready

You decide

No deposit until you sign. The quote stands for 90 days. Most clients take 2–4 weeks.
V
Weeks 1–10

In the workshop

Six to ten weeks from signed quote to gate-ready. One project at a time per bench. You're welcome to drop by.
VI
Install week

On site, two days

Day one: groundwork and motor box. Day two: gate hung, motor connected, force-tested, handover folder.
VII
Year 1 onwards

Service for life

Annual inspection included for three years. 24-hour callout for as long as the studio exists.
§ 02Common questions

Twenty questions. Honest answers.

The process
Typically 12–16 weeks from your first call to the day the gate opens: a week or so to arrange and do the site visit, ten days for the drawing, a few weeks while you decide, then six to ten weeks in the workshop and two days on-site.
No. The 90-minute site visit is free and without obligation. We ask only that you're genuinely interested in a gate — not researching prices for fun.
Yes, by appointment. Ring first so the kettle's on and we can make sure a gate is on the bench rather than in the galvanising bath.
Installation is Monday to Friday only — we try not to disturb neighbours with groundwork at weekends. Site visits can be arranged on Saturdays by agreement.
Design & specification
Yes, if it's achievable in iron or steel at the width you need. Bring the reference to the site visit and we'll tell you honestly whether it can be made to scale.
We've installed twin-leaf swing gates up to 7m total opening and cantilever sliders up to 9m. Beyond that, structural engineering input is required for the piers and motor foundation.
Usually yes. We've matched Victorian ironwork, Edwardian estate gates and 1970s continental-style designs. Bring good photographs to the site visit.
Yes. A pedestrian wicket gate within or beside the main gate is included in most large commissions at no extra cost.
Automation
BFT (underground and above-ground), FAAC, CAME and for sliders, BFT Ares and CAME BX. We don't use budget or own-brand motors.
Usually yes, if the structure is sound. We assess hinge condition, leaf weight and pier stability before quoting. If it can't be done safely, we'll tell you before we start.
Every motor comes with an emergency manual-release key. Battery backup is standard on most motor types and is strongly recommended.
Yes. Smart-app control is available on all motor types we install. It allows opening, closing, status monitoring and sharing access with family members or regular visitors.
Planning & regulations
Usually not, if your gate is under 2m — or under 1m where it sits next to a road used by vehicles. Listed buildings, conservation areas and Article 4 Directions can remove these rights. We recommend checking with your local authority before ordering.
BS-EN 13241, the European standard for industrial and residential powered gates. Every motor installation is force-tested against this standard on the day of commissioning, and we issue a written certificate.
Conservation area consent is sometimes required for new gate structures, independent of automated status. The motor itself rarely affects consent. Again, check with your local authority.
After installation
All our gates come with a written parts-and-labour guarantee of up to five years depending on specification, covering both the gate and the automation. Extended service plans are available.
We recommend a full inspection annually. This includes force-limit testing, lubrication, a safety-edge check and a control board diagnostic. Most problems caught early are cheap to fix; left, they aren't.
We take on inherited gates — ones we didn't make. Ring us, describe the motor brand, and we'll tell you on the call whether we can help. If we can't, we'll point you to someone who can.
